Marty "scissor legs" Sheedy is in many ways your normal average 21 year old. However one thing that does set him apart is the way he walks. Having two dislocated hips as part of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, Marty had difficulty walking normally. When he was very young he learned his own way of walking despite some doctors wanting him to do it the "right" way. By crossing his legs over each other and shifting his weight in this position he is able to keep his balance much easier and therefore walk farther and longer. Now that Marty is older he aims to raise awareness about the way he walks. He figures that if it benefits him, why couldn't it benefit someone else? Thus Project Scissor Gait Foundation was born. Holding bowling fundraisers, visiting various conventions, talking to future medical professionals and being a Shriner, Marty aims to educate various individuals and organizations about his nonprofit organization as well as raise awareness for Arthrogryposis and Prune Belly Syndrome.
A Message From Marty
I am a person who knows and understands the needs and importance of programs such as these for people with disabilities. I am the Executive Director of my foundation, Project Scissor Gait Foundation, where I raise awareness for my condition, educate the public as well as create opportunities for those afflicted with Arthrogryposis and Prune Belly Syndrome. I also currently serve on the Dearborn Commission on Disability Concerns, where I am the Chairperson of the Communications Committee.
I am a member of the Masonic Organization, as well as the Shriners Organization, and I am also a patient public speaker for the Shriners Hospital Chicago. I serve on the Special Events Committee and various other positions within the Shriners Organization. In the past year I have attended and spoken at many events for the Shriners, including the Chicago Hospital Divan Seminar, Chicago Hospital Open House as well as a few shrine temples in the Midwest region. This past July I was very fortunate to speak at the 3rd annual Arthrogryposis convention in Dublin, Ohio. I have knowledge and understanding of the ADA as well as the laws pertaining to Persons with Disabilities.
My new venture is to continue doing motivational speaking not just for the Shriners, but also for Schools, Keynote, and Sales Seminars etc... If there is anything I can do to assist you please contact me. I know this is my life calling and I am working very hard to fulfill my destiny in this life.
